Nearly all of that is a dry blade. Two metal combs run against each other thousands of times a minute, and without oil between them they heat up and slow down. A few drops brings the glide back straight away.

What the oil actually does

• Keeps the blade cool, which is what keeps the dog sitting still.
• Keeps it gliding, so you get one clean pass instead of three.
• Makes the blade last far longer, because a dry blade wears itself out.
• Stops the teeth rusting between grooms.

How to use it

• Brush the loose hair out of the teeth first.
• Add a few drops along the blade before you start.
• Run the clipper for a few seconds so it spreads across the teeth.
• Wipe the excess off with a soft cloth, so it does not pick up hair.
• Top it up every few minutes during a long groom, and again at the end before it goes away.

If the blade feels warm against your wrist, it wants oil and a minute to cool. A few drops at a time is all it takes, so one bottle goes a very long way.
